expressive worship

My Real Family

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11

That’s my intention with these “Wednesday Worship” blogs and emails I’m doing: I want to encourage you and build you up! I want each one of you to know I appreciate your ministry (even though I may never have seen your worship team).

On this Thanksgiving weekend, I give thanks for those of you who lead worship, sing for the Lord, and play music because God has gifted you to share your talent!

I’ve been a believer for 35 years and a musician even longer. My family consists of a lovely wife (who I met in San Diego where she was worship director at Calvary Chapel), and two great kids (a daughter and a son).

For those of you who don’t know, I teach and work with a lot of mainstream artists – some of them are Christians, and many of them are not. I never hide who I am or Who I believe in when I work with them. And I’ve been blessed to be able to share my beliefs with quite a few of these artists.

Just last week I got a call from an indie artist who has almost all my DVDs, has been reading my blogs, and has been applying my Live Music Method concepts to his show and even his public speaking. He started asking me some spiritual questions, and I was able to share the Gospel with him. I explained that I was a sinner saved by grace.

His reply…”You seem to have a sense of fulfillment in your life. I don’t have that, but I wish I did!” I’m really glad I was able to talk to him about where that fulfillment comes from.

I have also taught and worked with a lot of Christian artists – Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Jars of Clay, NewSong, Francesca Battistelli, Sidewalk Prophets, and more – plus thousands of Christian indie artists and worship teams.

No matter who I’m working with, I feel like part of my job is teaching and part of it is encouragement. But when I work with Christian artists, worship artists, and praise teams, that job of encouragement is especially important. The Bible makes it clear that believers are adopted into the family as God’s children. So you’re my real family, after all, and I want to “build you up,” motivate you, and help you in your calling.

Share with us about what we can do for you. What topics would you like us to address in these Wednesday Worship blogs? What resources can we provide for you and your music? How can we be of service to your worship ministry?

Advice to the musicians…the ones who aren’t the leaders of the band but still want to glorify God in their playing!

  3. Merissa says:

    Tom,
I want to thank you for doing these blogs. They are so wonderfully informative and encouraging. God has really given you an awesome ministry.
You asked us to give you some topics for these wednesday blogs. I would love to hear what the worship band members who don’t sing, can enhance the worship experience, and maybe some ways to make those moments that usher people into worship.
Thank you so much for what you do,
    Merissa
