I was at church on Sunday, and my pastor’s message was about heaven. He led us to several places in Scripture that describe worship in heaven.
The main passage was Revelation 4:6-11; and he also read from Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 10. The continuity between the Old Testament and the New Testament in the description of heaven struck me as extraordinary!
I don’t know why it surprises me when stuff like that happens. But it touched me deeply, and I found it inspiring. So inspiring that it was really easy to worship. Why? Because I got a glimpse of God’s majesty and how fulfilling worship is going to be in eternity.
Our pastor proceeded to bring the Gospel into his message by leading us to Jesus’ incarnation, his coming to earth, being born to humble people and humble means, subjecting himself to dying on the cross for our sins. This is the same majestic God who is worthy of all living creatures giving glory and honor to!
I don’t know about you, but when I go to church on Sunday morning, oftentimes I’m not ready to worship. Between my sin, working long hours, raising two teenaged kids, finding a seat in a packed church, etc. – my focus (instead of worship) is more like “at least we made it here!”
You, as a worship leader/team have probably had time to prepare for worship. But most people don’t.
So instead of just breaking into song, expecting everyone to jump to their feet and worship, sometimes we need to inspire them first. We need to give them a reason to worship!
Thanks for the perspective of someone coming to a worship service and not already in the mood to worship. As lead worshipers it is our duty to encourage people by reminding them of why we worship. God deserves our adoration and worship above all others because of who He is and what He’s done for us. I often try to incorporate scripture into the worship service and will often take time to talk to the crowd about the aspects of who God and why we should worship in between songs.
